MEMORY AND LOSS
In my project I focused on significant locations in and around my home in Chapeltown, Leeds. I aimed to capture opposing emotions, around loss and memory. By visualising happiness, sadness, and states of mind. My happy memories are informed by my childhood experiences and connection to family. The sadness emotions stem from the recent loss of my mother to cancer, followed by the loss our home, and her belongings that has made an impact. I aim to explore this through photography and my supporting research. A key question that informed this project was how photography can visualise this new uncertain stage of my life?
In my project I wanted to explore the local landscape, along with the interiors and exteriors of our shared home. The first few images have a lot of nature contained. Green grass and trees represent my growth through time. However, in the second portion of my images the colour of red is very strong for the emotion of sadness, as it can represent love as well as anger. I wanted to explore the different photographic techniques, such as slow shutter speed showing motion blur, representing ideas that everything is temporary by a ghostly image having a ghostly appearance as if it's fading away like vanitas. I also used double exposure to show how my memories are part of me.
In conclusion, my project explores loss and memory though interior and exterior places within Chapeltown, Leeds, that are meaningful to me. These places evoke happiness as well as sadness. Throughout this project I have used double exposure to present memory. I have also used slow shutter speed to create a transparent image representing the loss of my mum. I believe my project went well as I edited my images as double exposure to reflect my emotions of loss and memory. Each photograph tells a unique story and portrays the close relationship I shared with my late Mum.
